News from the Missoula Nordic Ski Club and around the region
X-C MONTANA
Number 26 - Early Winter, 2001
At last the wonderment of snow, no better holiday gift to the Nordic community. A winter-in-white always seems to bring out the best in folks. This good cheer will be in abundance at our annual meeting where our cross-country ski family will have the opportunity to elect elders for the coming biennium. Those of you who have an interest in serving please contact current program coordinators or officers for details. Short of running for office, our grooming and youth programs need an infusion of energy to maintain past standards so please consider volunteering in these areas.
In the spirit of volunteerism, I would like to extend our collective appreciation to Ross Miller who has decided to step down as program coordinator for equipment maintenance. Ross has graciously volunteered many hours over the years to our grooming and youth programs. Ross was also instrumental in the design and construction of our new equipment storage shed at Pattee Canyon. When you see him on the ski trails this winter take a minute to thank him for all the good work (and to slow him down long enough for me to catch up).
Also, a hearty welcome to Ray Johnson who has recently returned to Missoula (with wife Katie) and has volunteered to assist Dave Jones with grooming coordination and equipment maintenance. Please contact Ray or Dave for information on how you can assist in these programs.
Thanks to all the volunteers who participated in the annual Pattee Canyon workday. Trail clearing, slash disposal and application of wood chips will serve the public with better ski conditions this winter.
The club recently purchased a new snowmobile to support our grooming program. The snowmobile was funded from our membership dues and the Montana Recreation Trails Grant Program.
The club also requires purchase of new grooming attachments (~$6000.00) and continued support to fund annual grooming operational expenses (~$5,000.00/year).
This winter we have an opportunity to provide some level of grooming in the Rattlesnake Recreation Area, but the level of support must be commensurate with the club's capacity and generosity as related to volunteered services and monetary donations. Please contribute so we can maintain and expand Nordic skiing opportunities in the Missoula area.
In closing, I would like to paraphrase a quote from the legendary ®Jackrabbit Johannsen, ®When skiing through the evening woods and darkness overtakes you .everyplace is your home .
Ski free of Care, Tom Daer, President
