For all those who want an awesome place to skate that is completely new and different, listen to this! The Bitterroot Ridgerunners Snowmobile Club will be grooming the Lost Horse canyon rd. super early in the a.m. on friday March 1st. We were told that they would be finished by 9 or 10 a.m. on friday. So if you can get out there and take advantage of their snowcat grooming-DO IT! This is just a one time deal. There is a snowmobiling event there Sat., so it could be really busy and not so much fun that day. If you have never been up that drainage, it is beautiful, and they will be going all the way up to the historic forest service cabin just shy of Twin Lakes (roughly 12 miles up). If you see the groomer up there, please consider joining their club (it is only like $10/year!) or at least THANK HIM!

Skated 30K at Skalkaho Hwy today. Conditions were good with minimal snowmobile traffic (only saw 2 parties). Very good coverage. Its seems like they tend to groom on Thursdays or Fridays so weekend mornings are a good time to head up there.

> Visited a few places in the last few days:
> 12/20 - 4th of July Pass, east of Coeur d'Alene. 2 - 2 hour fifteen
> minute drive. Ungroomed, it seemed, in recent days when we were there,
> but seemed like it had been packed and groomed at some point.
> Nonetheless totally skiable and lovely. Narrowish trails, a lot to
> explore.
>
> 12/22 - Snoqualmie Pass, Cascades, WA. Obviously a haul. Groomed for
> skate but no tracks just yet. Tons and tons and tons of snow.
> Spectacular views out over the nearby mountains. Nice 15k loop of the
> mountain with a seemingly endless climb early on. Great workout.
>
> 12/23 - Mount Spokane State Park, northeast of Spokane. Best skiing
> we've done thus far this season. Untold volume of snow, easily over 2
> feet of cover. Nice soft snow, nothing icy, slushy, or crusty. Classic
> tracks were impeccable and speedy. Most of the trail system is groomed
> and laid with tracks in two directions. Views out over the mountains of
> Idaho that swelled the soul. $20 for a day Sno-Park pass or $40 for the
> season. Would highly recommend this place if you're considering a
> little bit of a drive. Great, great place.

Conditions are quite good at MacDonald Pass, located on Hwy. 12 between Garrison (I-90) and Helena. The trail system, maintained by the good folks at Last Chance Nordic, is a nice option located about 75 minutes from Missoula. For current conditions, see: http://lcnsc.blogspot.com/

Skalkaho Pass is a great place to go for a ski tour - early season. Gate is closed at the bottom, so no vehicles. There was enough coverage Friday Dec. 7th to put skis on right away if you stay to the right. Conditions improve as you go up. The B.Root Ridgerunners Snowmobile club has not groomed yet with their snowcat, but it will be soon.Happy Touring!
