Anyone have word on conditions here or grassy mountain in the past few days?

We groomed the last time for the season this morning. The temp at 8:00 was 20F with a brisk north wind and a couple of inches of fresh snow. The old base had deteriorated some more as a result of the spring like weather the last week. It stayed cool enough today that conditions should be pretty decent early tomorrow. Unfortunately, there's still no base off-track, and the groomed surfaces will be hard as a rock by tomorrow night.

We got all the implements stored and we hauled the snowmobiles to their summer quarters. See ya next season!

Skiing is still good up at Haggin, if you hit it at the right time of day. About 2:00 in the afternoon worked well today, a little icy under trees. Good coverage though, one more grooming might smooth things out for the rest of the spring.

Well, we did it one more time. We had several inches of fresh snow to work with, and the temp was 12F at 8:00 when we started. We got all the new snow knocked down and the tracks reset before 10:30; by then the temp had risen to 40F. The old base is as hard as a rock and the tree wells are working down to bare ground and out on to the pack in places. Next weekend we are going to get the machines out and store the implements. We'll pack once more then, if conditions permit.

We started at 8:00 with the temp already at 25F. We found a dusting of new snow on top of hard pan. We left the old set tracks untouched since there was no way we could reset them to the same quality. We did freshen up the skate lanes and downhills. Unless the weather pattern changes, we are probably done grooming for this season.

We opened up the detour at the lower entrance to Li'l Cal to bypass the glacier that has formed over the Crooked John Creek crossing. The virgin snow on the detour was about 3 inches of crust on top of about 2 feet of loose powder. Although this area is in the shade most of the time, it makes you wonder how the off-track skiing is going to be this spring. By the time the snow is set up enough to ski on, it may be gone! This has to be the leanest snow year in the 25+ years we've been grooming at Mt. Haggin.

Conditions are remarkably good at Mt. Haggin. We received only about an inch of new snow since last Friday, but there was very little icing evident. We got started at 8:00 with the temp at 0F under clear blue skies, no wind, and the sun just coming over the ridge. We had to work fast with a crew of only two to beat the heat. As it turned out we got everything done except we elected to leave the existing tracks on Sugarloaf since they were in excellent shape. The tracks we did set are less than perfect in a few spots where we couldn't scratch up enough fluff for proper molding and to stabilize the tracksetter. All in all though they're fine. There is one hazard where Crooked John Creek is flowing on top of the ice as it crosses Li'l Cal just in from the lower junction with the Crooked John loop. We'll probably have to open up the detour next weekend.

I did the same loop as reported last week with the same wax and it worked fine - a little faster actually. The temp stayed around 30F till 2:00 when I left. By then the sky to the southwest was darkening with the system that has been predicted. I hope the skiers tonight will be able to see the new moon.

Awesome classic skiing today. I did not skate but the skate lane was in good shape with about an inch of cold powder on top of the groomed surface. Cold- it was 11 degrees at 1:30 when I left.
